Skin Toner: What It Is and When to Use It

If skin toner isn’t already a part of your beauty routine, you may want to consider adding it. This skin care product removes oil and unclogs your pores. This helps prevent acne and other issues.

What is Skin Toner?

There are many different types of toners, but all of them work in a similar way. They are liquids that penetrate your skin’s surface. Their chemical properties allow them to remove dead skin cells and excess oil. In the past, most toners on the market would dry out your skin. However, today there are many options for both DIY toners and store-bought products that will hydrate your skin.

Types of Toners

If you are looking for a facial toner, you will notice a huge variety of the active ingredients. In addition to the products you can find at beauty stores, there are also ingredients you can use to make your own toner. Which option works best for you will depend on your skin type and specific concerns.

Here are some ingredients that may appear in toners and when they are helpful:

Alpha-Hydroxy Acids

Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) are acids that naturally occur in different food products. In cosmetics, they can help to remove dead skin cells through exfoliation and can visibly brighten your complexion. You should look for AHAs in toners if you have large pores or dull skin.

Common AHAs include:

  • citric acid
  • glycolic acid
  • hydroxycaproic acid
  • hydroxycaprylic acid
  • lactic acid
  • malic acid
  • tartaric acid

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) that is derived from willow bark. Its chemical structure makes it oil-soluble, which means it can easily penetrate your skin to cleanse your pores. It does this by dissolving dead skin, dirt, oil, and makeup. It works particularly well with whiteheads and blackheads. Salicylic acid toners are best suited for those with acne-prone skin.

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid is naturally produced in your body and it helps various tissues, including your skin, keep their moisture. If you have sensitive skin, choosing a toner with this compound can prevent your skin from getting dehydrated or irritated. You can also look for other moisturizing additives such as glycerin or rose water and you should make sure to use an alcohol-free toner.

Some natural products you can use as face toners include:

Juniper Berry Essential Oil

Essential oils can make a wonderful addition to your skin care routine and juniper berry oil is one example of this. You never want to apply 100% pure essential oils directly to your skin. We recommend three drops of essential oil to four teaspoons of carrier oil.  You can also add hydrating ingredients if you would like, such as aloe vera. This is an effective toner that won’t dry out your skin.

Witch Hazel

Witch hazel is a liquid derived from trees in the Hamamelis genus. Its astringent properties make it a great natural toner for oily skin. You can apply witch hazel directly using a cotton ball. Make sure to test it first to ensure you do not have any allergy or sensitivity.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar makes an excellent toner and you likely already have it in your kitchen. You should dilute it before applying. About two tablespoons of vinegar in one cup of water works well. If you would like, you can also add diluted essential oils to the mix to create a scent you enjoy.

When to Use Facial Toner

The best time to use your toner is after cleaning your face, but before moisturizing. Ending your skin care routine with your preferred moisturizer or face cream is helpful to counteract any potential drying effects.

Who Should Use Toner?

Skin toner is a great addition to your routine if you are noticing excess oil or acne. It can also be a good preventive method even if you do not have these problems, but it may not be necessary for everyone. The best way to determine if this beauty product is right for you is to try it. Test any product you use, whether you purchased it or made it at home, on a small area of skin away from your face first. After you confirm there is no adverse reaction, add toner to your routine. Within the first few weeks, you will see if this product will benefit you. If you are not sure whether toner will help with your skin, consult a dermatologist.
