Bergamot Oil: Essential Oils by Pyurvana™

What is Bergamot Oil?

Bergamot is a type of citrus fruit that grows on Citrus bergamia plants that are common in tropical areas of the Mediterranean. These fruits are around the same size as an orange but have a green color similar to a lime.

Although they are sometimes referred to as bergamot oranges, their flavor is very different from a typical orange. The flesh is very sour, although slightly less sour than a lemon. In most cases, it is not eaten fresh. If you have had earl grey tea, then you are familiar with the taste of bergamot. This is because Citrus bergamia gives this tea its distinctive flavor and aroma.

Bergamot essential oil is distilled by cold pressing the peel of Citrus bergamia fruit. This process involves compressing the peel in order to extract its oil, which is then separated from water and other parts of the fruit using centrifugal force and a variety of other methods. This is the most common extraction method for citrus essential oils, as these scents become much weaker when exposed to heat.

Complementary Scents

Since bergamot is in the citrus family, it pairs well with grapefruit, orange, and lemon essential oils. Citrus blends have a clean and energizing aroma. Bergamot’s floral notes also make a great complement for rosemary and lavender. Since this essential oil has a stronger smell, it will often be a dominant note in blends.

Primary Benefits

There is some evidence that bergamot oil can smooth and tame curly hair. Some individuals will mix a few drops of bergamot essential oil with their shampoo or conditioner or will apply it with carrier oil to their scalp. As an additional benefit, this will give your hair a nice citrus scent.

Bergamot oil is believed to purify and cleanse skin. It may be beneficial for those with oily skin and can help remove dirt and impurities. It is a common additive for skin care products due to these properties. If you are going to use bergamot topically, make sure to dilute the essential oil with a carrier oil and test it on a small area before applying it directly to your skin.

The aroma of bergamot is very soothing and may help you relax. Due to the citrus notes, it can also be energizing and uplifting. Many people find the oil is a great pick-me-up and helps them feel more joyful and at ease. You can enjoy the calming effects of bergamot oil by diffusing it or using it with a carrier oil for a massage.

How to Use Bergamot Essential Oil

You can diffuse bergamot oil to fill your home, office, or other location with its delightful aroma. Use three or four drops for the best effect. You can also mix bergamot with other scents depending on your preference. Avoid using too much as this can create an overpowering aroma and be sure to limit your diffusion time to avoid overexposure.

If you apply to the skin, mix one or two drops of pure essential oil with one teaspoon of carrier oil, such as coconut oil. This prevents damage to your skin. Applying the diluted oil while you are showering can also enhance its fragrance.

Cautions

One of the major side effects of bergamot oil is photosensitivity. This means that if your skin is exposed to sunlight after applying the oil topically, you may be at a greater risk of sunburns. You should avoid sunlight or ultraviolet (UV) rays for up to 12 hours after using bergamot essential oil topically.

Some people have more sensitive skin than others. If you plan on using bergamot oil topically, mix it with a carrier oil and stop using if you notice any adverse reaction. You should avoid getting the oil in sensitive areas such as your eyes, nose, or ears and test on a small area first.

Keep out of reach of children.

If you are pregnant, nursing, or under the care of a physician, consult your health care provider before using bergamot or any other essential oil.

This essential oil is for external use only and should not be ingested.

Pure essential oils are flammable and should be stored in a cool, dry location away from any open flames or excess heat.
