What is Clary Sage Oil?

Salvia sclarea, more commonly called clary or clary sage, is a biennial or short-lived perennial. It grows in the Mediterranean basin as well as parts of Asia and Africa. The Salvia genus is a part of the mint family (Lamiaceae) and includes a variety of different sage plants. Although clary sage is closely related to Salvia officinalis (common sage), the two plants and their extracted essential oils have some important differences. Clary sage has sweeter floral notes, whereas common sage has a stronger herbal scent. Common sage is used more in cooking, whereas clary sage is more commonly used for fragrances.

The clary sage plant got its Latin name sclarea, meaning clear, from the Romans. This was because they used the herb to make an eyewash. It had many medicinal uses in Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome and appeared in the writings of Theophrastus, Dioscorides, and Pliny the Elder. In addition to its use in ancient remedies, it was historically used to replace hops in certain types of beers. The herb is also tied to metaphysics, especially in relation to the third eye chakra and psychic awareness.

We extract our clary sage oil from the flowers and leaves of Salvia sclarea plants sourced from China. We use steam distillation and place the plant parts in a large airtight vessel called a retort. This mixture is heated using steam to produce a vapor that contains the essential oil. When the vapor is condensed, we separate the oil from water and purify it.

Complementary Scents

Clary sage pairs well with flowery scents such as lavenderrose, or ylang ylang. It also is a wonderful complement for citrus oils including orangelemon, and bergamot. The woody notes of frankincense essential oil are also a perfect match for clary sage. This last pairing is also a great choice if you are interested in diffusing clary sage for spiritual balance.

Primary Benefits

Clary sage is a wonderful oil to use to strengthen your hair and protect it from heat damage during styling. You can combine it with fractionated coconut oil, water, conditioner, and another oil of your choice such as rose or lavender to create a natural heat protectant spray. You can also mix it with the carrier oil of your choice and conditioner to use it as part of a deep conditioning treatment.

This essential oil is also a great choice for cleansing and purifying your skin. It can balance your dry or oily skin and can give you a radiant and vibrant look. Make sure to mix it with a carrier oil before applying it topically. In addition to the benefits for your skin’s appearance, you will get to enjoy the soothing scent of this oil.

Diffusing the oil or using it for a massage can promote feelings of relaxation. Its herbal scent is very calming for many people. You can create a room spray using clary sage and other calming essential oils including lavender or bergamot. This gives your entire home a soothing atmosphere.

Like other types of sage, clary sage is strongly tied to metaphysics. It can be helpful in chakra work for balancing the sacral chakra, Svadhisthana. This chakra is related to sensuality and clary sage is thought to be a natural aphrodisiac. In addition, the oil can help balance your third eye chakra, Ajna. This is due to clary sage’s ties to psychic awareness and its historical association with eyes.

How to Use Clary Sage Essential Oil

To diffuse this scent, add a few drops of clary sage oil to your favorite diffuser according to the instructions for that particular model. Be careful not to add too much or the fragrance might become overpowering. You can diffuse clary sage alone or mix it with other oils to create a unique blend.

To apply this essential oil topically, mix three drops with one teaspoon of the carrier oil of your choice. These include coconut oil, olive oil, or jojoba oil. It is important to never apply pure essential oils directly to your skin as they can cause rashes or other adverse reactions. Some people are more sensitive to the compounds in essential oils and might notice a reaction even when the oil is diluted. If you have any problems, stop using clary sage oil immediately and seek medical attention.

Cautions

Clary sage oil is not suited for those with low blood pressure. If you have any health conditions, it is important to speak with your doctor before using any essential oils.

Like all pure essential oils, clary sage oil can cause an adverse reaction if applied directly to your skin. Always dilute essential oils with a carrier oil before applying them topically. You should also avoid sensitive areas such as your ears, eyes, or nose. If you have any adverse reaction or skin sensitivity to clary sage oil, you should see a healthcare professional as soon as possible and stop using the oil.

Keep out of reach of children.

If you are pregnant, nursing, or under the care of a physician, consult your health care provider before using clary sage or any other essential oil.

This essential oil is for external use only and should not be ingested.

Pure essential oils are flammable and should be stored in a cool, dry location away from any open flames or excess heat.
