More Information
What is Copaiba Oil?
Copaiba (co-pie-e-buh) is the name for the resin produced by trees in the Copaifera genus. It is what is known as an oleoresin, which means that it is an oily liquid rather than a solid. These various species grow throughout the Amazon rainforest. Copaifera langsdorffii, which is the source for our copaiba oil, is one of the most common. This tree is medium-sized and produces white flowers and oily, yellow fruits. Its wood is very porous and is filled with the oleoresin, which flows out when the bark is cut. There are various methods to collect the oil without causing lasting damage to the trees, which helps to conserve the Amazon.
Indigenous peoples in the Amazon have used the oil from Copaifera trees for centuries. It was commonly used to treat skin conditions including eczema and as an antiseptic. Certain groups near Yaviza, Panama, used the oil in rituals for newborns to ward off any hexes and to impart knowledge to the child.
In order to extract our 100% pure copaiba essential oil, we use steam distillation. We heat the liquid oleoresin using steam from below. This vaporizes the volatile compounds in the mix. We then distill these and separate them using centrifugation, filtration, and other methods.
Complementary Scents
Copaiba’s woodsy notes complement sweet, floral scents such as ylang ylang and lavender. When combined with peppermint or ginger, it has a wintery and uplifting aroma. Copaiba has a more subtle scent than some other essential oils, so it contributes well to blends without being too overpowering.
Primary Benefits
Copaiba oil has a lovely woodsy aroma with spicy notes. It is a great choice for aromatherapy and is incredibly relaxing. It also makes a wonderful counterpart to floral scents and adds a bit of sweetness to blends without being overpowering. One way to enjoy this essential oil is to add diluted copaiba to a bath. Adding Epsom salts can help break up the oil and allow it to more thoroughly mix with your bathwater. This results in a soothing aroma.
The scent is also very grounding and can help quiet your mind. Diffusing it is a safer alternative to burning a candle or incense during meditation. Copaiba oil is excellent for your root chakra, muladhara. You can pair copaiba with other root chakra oils, guided meditation, or other methods for balancing this chakra.
Because of its high b-caryophyllene content, copaiba oil is excellent for skin care. It nourishes your skin and can help to reduce the appearance of imperfections. In addition, it is a more mild oil that tends to be beneficial for those with sensitive skin, although you still need to dilute and test it before use.
How to Use Copaiba Essential Oil
To diffuse copaiba oil, simply add a few drops to your diffuser. Make sure to follow the instructions for that particular model. We also recommend limiting your diffusion time to avoid overexposure. You can use copaiba on its own or combine it with other oils to create unique blends.
When using any pure essential oil topically, it is important to dilute it with a carrier oil first. We recommend using three drops of copaiba oil with one teaspoon of your preferred carrier. If you are using the oil on your face, you should use three drops with four teaspoons of carrier oil.
Cautions
Pure essential oils can cause skin irritation and should never be applied topically unless they are diluted. Even when diluted, copaiba oil can cause skin irritation or an allergic reaction. Always test on a small area first and avoid sensitive areas like your eyes, nose, or ears. If you notice any adverse reaction, stop use immediately and consult with a health professional.
Keep out of reach of children.
If you are pregnant, nursing, or under the care of a physician, consult your health care provider before using copaiba or any other essential oil.
This essential oil is for external use only and should not be ingested.
Pure essential oils are flammable and should be stored in a cool, dry location away from any open flames or excess heat.
