More Information
What is Peppermint Oil?
Mentha piperita is a type of hybrid herb that is a cross between watermint and spearmint. It is the most frequently used species from the Mentha genus, which contains over 25 different varieties of mint. The plant grows naturally in Europe and the Middle East but is cultivated in many different locations around the world. Since it is a hybrid, it does not produce seeds. It is grown through vegetative reproduction by using part of the original peppermint plant.
Ancient Egyptians, Romans, and Greeks all used peppermint as a remedy for indigestion. Although there is evidence that peppermint grew naturally as early as 1000 BC, it was first cultivated in England in the late 17th century. In the 18th century, it was used throughout Western Europe to remedy nausea, vomiting, morning sickness, menstrual disorders, and respiratory infections. Chewing peppermint leaves was also an old folk remedy for toothaches.
To extract our peppermint oil, we use steam distillation. First, we collect Mentha piperita leaves in a large vat. Next, we introduce steam from below, which vaporizes the oils in the plant. We collect these oils, condense them, and purify them. The result is 100% pure peppermint essential oil.
Complementary Scents
Peppermint oil has a lively scent that pairs well with herbal essential oils such as eucalyptus, lavender, rosemary, and oregano. It also makes a great complement for citrus scents such as grapefruit and lemon. For a warm winter blend, you can combine peppermint with cinnamon bark, clove, or juniper berry oil.
Primary Benefits
The scent of peppermint is thought to boost your energy and can act as a natural pick-me-up. Its aroma is calming without being tiring and can improve your focus. This makes it an excellent choice to diffuse in your office or any other space where you want to get work done. Pairing it with a citrus oil can help to enhance these effects.
Peppermint is often added to many beauty products. It is used in lip gloss for instant fresh breath and adding a drop or two of this oil to an unscented lotion can help give your skin a smooth shine. If you are not one who enjoys strong fruity fragrances, then peppermint is a great alternative. It smells amazing without being sweet or overwhelming.
The menthol in peppermint oil gives it a natural warming effect, so it is perfect for a soothing massage. To do this, mix peppermint oil with your preferred carrier oil. Coconut, olive, and jojoba oil are all great options.
How to Use Peppermint Essential Oil
To diffuse peppermint oil, add a few drops according to the instructions for your diffuser. The aroma is very strong so you don’t need to add much to enjoy its effects. Adding too much essential oil or keeping your diffuser running for a long period of time can lead to an overpowering scent, so make sure to limit your use.
Our 100% pure essential oils must always be diluted with a carrier oil before applying them topically. To do this, add three drops of peppermint oil to one teaspoon of carrier oil. You may choose to start with a weaker dilution to avoid any sensitivity. You can then massage the blend into your skin.
Cautions
Any pure essential oil can damage your skin if you do not dilute it before using it topically. Always add peppermint oil to a carrier oil and test on a small area before applying it more widely. You should also avoid sensitive areas. If you notice any adverse reaction, stop usage immediately and consult your doctor.
Keep out of reach of children.
If you are pregnant, nursing, or under the care of a physician, consult your health care provider before using peppermint or any other essential oil.
This essential oil is for external use only and should not be ingested.
Pure essential oils are flammable and should be stored in a cool, dry location away from any open flames or excess heat.
