What is Clove Oil?

The clove tree has a few different scientific names. Syzygium aromaticum is the most common, but you may also see Eugenia aromatica, Eugenia caryophyllata, or Caryophyllus aromaticus. These are all referring to the same plant, an evergreen tree with large leaves and crimson flowers which is native to the Molucca islands, now part of Indonesia. The aromatic flower buds of this tree are called cloves and these are used to make clove oil..

Clove was one of the earliest spices to be traded and different cultures throughout history have used it for various purposes. In China, during the third century BC, an emperor from the Han Dynasty required anyone addressing him to chew cloves to freshen their breath. Arab traders brought the spice to Europe in the fourth century. Throughout the Middle Ages, it was used to treat gout, digestive issues, and tooth pain. Today, the spice is common in Asian, African, and Middle Eastern cuisine and clove oil is used for aromatherapy.

We source the cloves to make our essential oil from Syzygium aromaticum grown in Indonesia. Essential oil is extracted from flowering clove buds using steam distillation. During this process, we inject steam into a vat filled with these buds to vaporize scent molecules. We then distill the vapor and purify the essential oil.

Complementary Scents

Clove oil pairs well with citrus oils such as grapefruit, bergamot, lemon, and orange. A festive holiday blend can include clove along with peppermint and cinnamon. Its woody tones also make it a great complement for floral aromas such as ylang ylang.

Primary Benefits

Clove essential oil is great for improving the appearance of your skin. It may help to smooth wrinkles and other fine lines while also reducing redness. The oil can help to clear and purify your pores and remove dead skin cells. The main component, eugenol, has many rejuvenating properties for your skin. Make sure to mix clove oil with a carrier oil or lotion before applying and always avoid sensitive areas.

This oil has a warming effect which helps increase blood flow to areas where it is applied. As a result, many people use it in hair care to stimulate their hair follicles and encourage growth. You do this by mixing clove oil with coconut oil or jojoba oil and gently massaging it into your scalp.

For aromatherapy, clove oil can help you to relax and unwind. It has an uplifting scent and can help put you in a good mood. You can try diffusing it on its own or as part of a blend. You can also use it to make a massage oil. All of these are great ways to enjoy this delightful scent.

How to Use Clove Essential Oil

To diffuse, add a few drops of clove oil. Adding too much can lead to an overwhelming scent, so be sure to add only the suggested amount for your diffuser. If you would like, you can add other essential oils with clove to create a custom aroma blend.

If you are applying clove oil topically, be sure to dilute it with a carrier oil first, such as olive oil, coconut oil, or jojoba oil. We recommend about three drops of essential oil to one teaspoon of carrier oil. You can also use a lower concentration if you have sensitive skin.

Cautions

The eugenol in clove oil can increase levels of serotonin in your body, which can be dangerous if you are taking selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). Clove oil can also interact with anticoagulants. If you are taking any medication or have any health conditions, consult with your physician before using clove or any other essential oil.

Pure essential oils can damage your skin if applied directly. You should always dilute pure oils before application. It’s also important to avoid applying clove oil, even if it has been diluted, to sensitive areas such as around your eyes, ears, or nose. Some people are more sensitive to the compounds in essential oils than others and allergies may occur. Test the diluted oil on a small area of skin first before applying more widely. If you notice an adverse reaction, stop use immediately and seek medical care.

Keep out of reach of children.

If you are pregnant, nursing, or under the care of a physician, consult your health care provider before using clove or any other essential oil.

This essential oil is for external use only and should not be ingested.

Pure essential oils are flammable and should be stored in a cool, dry location away from any open flames or excess heat.
