What is Oregano Oil?

Oregano is a perennial herb in the mint family that grows in temperate climates. There are multiple varieties of oregano plants. The most common source for the spice is Origanum vulgare, or common oregano. To make our essential oil, we use Origanum minutiflorum, also known as Turkish oregano. This subspecies grows only in high altitudes and its oil contains higher concentrations of carvacrol.

This herb was first grown in Ancient Greece and its name comes from the Greek words “oros” (mountain) and “ganos” (joy). The Ancient Greeks believed oregano came from Aphrodite, who grew it in her garden as a symbol of happiness. The Ancient Romans also used this herb for cooking and medicine. This spread its use across Europe. In the Middle Ages, people believed that chewing oregano leaves could cure rheumatism, coughing, toothaches, and indigestion. During the Elizabethan era, it was used to bring good luck and was thought to induce psychic dreams when worn during sleep.

To extract Origanum minutiflorum essential oil, we use steam distillation. This involves placing the leaves of the oregano plant in a large vat, then introducing steam. The heat vaporizes the scent compounds in the plant. We then distill and purify the oregano oil.

Complementary Scents

Oregano essential oil pairs well with other herbal scents including rosemary and clary sage. You can also combine it with bergamot, tea tree, peppermint, or lavender.

Primary Benefits

Oregano is a great essential oil to keep on hand for natural house cleaning. It can be paired with lemon oil for this purpose. The oil acts as a deodorizer and can help clean dirty surfaces in your home.

This essential oil, whether used with others or on its own, can help improve the look and feel of your hair while encouraging growth. Combine oregano oil with a carrier oil, such as olive, jojoba, or coconut oil. Massage it into your scalp and then throughout your hair. Leave this on for 30 minutes, then wash it out. This gives your hair a refreshing herbal scent. Using your other favorite aromas allows you to create a relaxing blend that helps you unwind while beautifying your hair.

Because of oregano’s historical association with joy and love, diffusing it is thought to create a positive environment and lift your spirits. It is associated with the goddesses Venus and Aphrodite and can contribute to a romantic atmosphere whether you diffuse it, add the diluted oil to your bath, or use it to create a massage oil.

How to Use Oregano Essential Oil

To diffuse oregano oil, add a few drops to your favorite diffuser and make sure to follow any instructions for that specific model. Do not add more than the recommended number of drops and limit your diffusion to a few hours at a time. This helps avoid overexposure to the oil and damage to your diffuser.

If you wish to use oregano essential oil topically, add three drops of the oil to one teaspoon of a carrier oil. Never apply 100% pure essential oils directly to your skin. Test the diluted oil on a small area first before using it more widely. This is to ensure you don’t have any sensitivity or allergic reaction to this essential oil.

Cautions

It is important to dilute any 100% pure essential oil before applying it to your skin. You should also avoid sensitive areas including your nose, ears, or around your eyes. Some individuals are more sensitive to the compounds in oregano or other essential oils. If you notice any adverse reaction, stop use immediately and consult with your doctor.

Keep out of reach of children.

If you are pregnant, nursing, or under the care of a physician, consult your health care provider before using oregano or any other essential oil.

This essential oil is for external use only and should not be ingested.

Pure essential oils are flammable and should be stored in a cool, dry location away from any open flames or excess heat.
