What is Frankincense Oil?

Frankincense is the dried resin of trees from the Boswellia genus that grow across the Middle East, Asia, and Africa. The different varieties of Boswellia trees have similar aromas and properties, although there are some differences. There are four species that produce the resin: Boswellia carterii (also called Boswellia sacra), Boswellia frereana, Boswellia papyrifera, and finally Boswellia serrata. The serrata variety is thought to be the oldest of the four and is widely believed to be the variety referenced in the Bible. In addition to our Boswellia serrata oil, we also offer Boswellia carterii oil.

The resin got its name from the French “franc encens,” meaning “high-quality/pure incense.” It is most commonly known for the role it played in the New Testament of the Bible, where it was one of the gifts the three wise men gave to newborn Jesus, along with myrrh and gold. This demonstrates the high value this resin had throughout history. In addition to this, it was used before Biblical times by the Ancient Egyptians and Babylonians as a purifying anointing oil for religious ceremonies.

In order to distill frankincense oil, it is first necessary to collect resin from the Boswellia serrata trees. This is done by making incisions into the bark during the dry season, which allows gum resin to run out. It is left on the tree to solidify for a few weeks and then is collected. We extract essential oil from this dried resin using steam distillation. This process involves placing the resin in a vat and introducing steam from below. This vaporizes the oil in frankincense, which is then condensed and purified.

Complementary Scents

The spicy notes in frankincense pair well with citrus oils, including lemon, bergamot, and orange. Clary sage is also an excellent choice to blend as this also has spiritual significance for purification. Floral scents like ylang ylang, lavender, or rose are also great matches for the slight sweetness of frankincense oil.

Primary Benefits

One of the major benefits of frankincense essential oil is its religious and spiritual significance. It is helpful for cleansing and clearing your energy or that of your home. The oil is a wonderful choice to diffuse during meditation. It encourages focus, clarity, and a positive atmosphere. When diluted, you can use this essential oil to create an anointing blend for spiritual purification.

In the context of aromatherapy, frankincense oil is very calming and the scent can help you unwind after a long day. One way to enjoy the peaceful effects of this oil is by using it in your bath. To do this, mix the pure essential oil with a carrier oil such as jojoba oil. You can also add bath salts as salt acts as a natural emulsifier to help the oil blend into your bathwater.

Frankincense essential oil has many cosmetic benefits. Diluted in a carrier oil or lotion, you can use it for your skin care routine. Its astringent qualities help smooth wrinkles and reduce the appearance of discolorations or imperfections. It may also reduce redness and tighten your pores.

How to Use Frankincense Essential Oil

Follow the instructions for your specific diffuser when you are diffusing frankincense essential oil. Adding too much or keeping the diffuser running for too long can lead to an overpowering or overwhelming scent. This could also damage your diffuser.

When using frankincense or any other pure essential oil topically, be sure to dilute it with a carrier oil. Jojoba oil, coconut oil, and olive oil all work well for dilution. We recommend adding three drops of frankincense oil to one teaspoon of carrier oil, although you may prefer to use a more diluted blend if you have sensitive skin.

Cautions

Pure essential oils should never be applied directly to your skin. Always dilute our frankincense oil with a carrier oil before using it topically. Some people are more sensitive than others to the compounds in this and other essential oils. If you notice any adverse reaction, discontinue use immediately and seek medical attention.

Keep out of reach of children.

If you are pregnant, nursing, or under the care of a physician, consult your healthcare provider before using frankincense or any other essential oil.

This essential oil is for external use only and should not be ingested.

Pure essential oils are flammable and should be stored in a cool, dry location away from any open flames or excess heat.
