What is Lemongrass Essential Oil?

Lemongrass is not one specific plant but rather a variety of species in the Cymbopogon genus. These are all grasses which have a scent that resembles lemons, although there are some differences between the species. Citronella is one example of a type of lemongrass, although it is often referred to separately from other varieties. The lemongrass plant most commonly used for cooking is Cymbopogon citrianus, also known as West Indian lemongrass. The variety we use, Cymbopogon flexuosus, is the most common for essential oil distillation.

Lemongrass has been used for culinary and medicinal applications by a variety of cultures for thousands of years. In India, China, and Thailand, it has a particularly rich history as it relates to cooking and remains a common flavor in local cuisine. In East India and Sri Lanka, it was historically combined with other herbs to make “fever tea” to treat fevers, stomachaches, and various other ailments. In the 17th century, lemongrass oil was a popular perfume. The plant was first cultivated commercially in 1947 in Florida and Haiti.

In order to extract our lemongrass essential oil, we use steam distillation. This process involves placing Cymbopogon flexuosus grasses in a vat and introducing steam from below. This vaporizes the oils and we then collect, condense, and purify them.

Complementary Scents

Lemongrass essential oil has a light and uplifting aroma that pairs well with many different scents. For an herbal blend, try combining it with eucalyptusrosemary, or clary sage. It also works well with floral oils like lavenderrose, or ylang ylang. You can also use it with peppermint oil for a bold and energizing combination.

Primary Benefits

Lemongrass oil is a fantastic cleanser and makes a wonderful addition to your skin care routine. It is a great toner and can help clear your pores and brighten your complexion. Its scent is very uplifting and energizing, so it can boost your mood while helping beautify your skin. Be sure to dilute this or any other pure essential oil before using it topically.

In metaphysics, lemongrass is a powerful herb for spiritual purification. Within the Hoodoo tradition, it is one of the main ingredients in Van Van oil. This blend got its name from the herb vervain, which is pronounced similarly to “ver-vahn” (with a nasal “a”) in French Creole, which evolved into the Americanized name “Van Van.” The oil is used for a variety of purposes and is often blended with other oils for specific rituals. Lemongrass is common not only in Hoodoo but also in other spiritual traditions for protection, cleansing energy, purification, and luck. You can combine it with witch hazel, carrier oil, and water to create a spray, which is a safer alternative to burning the herb.

How to Use Lemongrass Oil

To diffuse lemongrass essential oil, follow the instructions for your specific diffuser. This usually involves adding a few drops of the oil to water. Be careful not to add too much or diffuse for too long, as this can lead to overexposure and/or an overwhelming scent.

To use lemongrass topically, you need to dilute it with a carrier oil first. Options include jojoba, olive, or coconut oil. We recommend using three drops of essential oil with one teaspoon of carrier oil to make a massage oil or three drops with four teaspoons of carrier for any facial application.

Cautions

Like any pure essential oil, you should never apply lemongrass oil directly to your skin. Use a carrier oil for dilution and test the mixture on a small area first. If you notice any adverse reaction, stop use immediately and contact your doctor.

Keep out of reach of children.

If you are pregnant, nursing, or under the care of a physician, consult your health care provider before using lemongrass or any other essential oil.

This essential oil is for external use only and should not be ingested.

Pure essential oils are flammable and should be stored in a cool, dry location away from any open flames or excess heat.
